Nokomis

The town of Nokomis is well-known for its beautiful seashore, fishing, surfing, shopping and dining options, and Nokomis Beach. The unincorporated town includes Nokomis Beach, at the south end of exclusive Casey Key.  Living in Nokomis offers residents a suburban rural mix feel, small town living, and a relaxed beach town atmosphere. Nokomis Beach is Sarasota County’s oldest public beach –  one of the more scenic beaches around, stretching 14 miles with white sand and clear blue waters. Nokomis Beach sand is stunningly beautiful. Because of the high levels of quartz, mixed with a darker crushed shell material, many find fossilized shark teeth among the seashells. The Nokomis Beach Plaza was built in the 1950s and is what they call a “Sarasota School of Architecture preservation success story.” Built by the architect, Jack West, of the famous Sarasota School of Architecture, the structure is a historic landmark. The North Jetty at Nokomis Beach is said to be the best surf spot on Florida’s West Coast. Because of the jetties, surfing here is some of the best in the state. Fishing is also very popular in this town. The rock jetties provide excellent cover and habitat for a variety of fish species. The North Jetty is a paved strip of rock that protrudes out into the Gulf, giving one the views of boats passing through the channel via the Intercoastal Waterway. Often you will see a family of dolphins jumping the waves behind these boats! One of the top favorite things about Nokomis is you can end your day with one of the best seats in the house for a coastal sunset.
